A classic yoga retreat — seven days in a group of 20 strangers, fixed schedule, someone else deciding when you do what. Sounds great, isn't for everyone. This guide describes the alternative: the self-planned retreat for two or alone at the west shore of Lake Garda. Your own rhythm, your own apartment, your own teachers on request.

Why the west shore works for a retreat

Three qualities yogis appreciate: quiet — the western Lago is calmer than the eastern even in peak season, and almost silent off-season. Nature within reach — mountains, lake, olive groves all within a 10-minute radius. Italian food — seasonal, slow, served in small portions. Mindful eating is not a concept here, it's everyday.

Add to that: the mild climate allows outdoor practice from March to November. In peak summer, you need an early morning or late evening (too hot midday); in spring and autumn, conditions are perfect.

Three setting options for the practice

1. On the apartment terrace

All four apartments have private terraces with lake view. Boutique Sky · M1 with the pergola provides the most shade — ideal for summer morning practice. Skylounge 360° · M3 with the rooftop delivers a more spectacular backdrop — sunrise over Monte Baldo. Resort Sky Spa · M4 combines whirlpool recovery with mindfulness practice. Yoga mat on request in the apartment.

2. At the lake itself

The Maderno promenade has an area east of the harbour that is almost empty in the morning. A small grass field directly at the water, view onto the Monte Baldo massif. Best time: 7:30–8:30 in summer, 8:30–9:30 in the shoulder seasons.

3. In the olive groves

Behind Maderno and on the slopes of Tignale lie olive groves that are completely silent in winter and barely visited even in summer. A clearing between the trees, a light breeze, the sound of birds. Best time: late morning, when the sun shines through the olive leaves.

If you don't want to practise solo only:

Going for guided practice: off-season outdoor classes are often nearly private (2–4 participants), basically a private session at studio pricing.

The concrete 5-day plan · self-planned retreat

Day 1 · Arrive

Arrival, no programme. Walk by the lake, apéro, early to bed. Screen break for 5 days starts now.

Day 2 · Breath

06:30 pranayama on the terrace (alternate-nostril breathing, 15 min). 07:00 sun salutation sequence (45 min). 08:00 slow breakfast (cornetti, espresso, fruit). Morning hike "Valle delle Cartiere" — the old paper-mill gorge, cool, shaded, meditative. Light lunch, afternoon reading or napping. 17:00 Yin class, 45 min. 18:30 sunset by the lake. 20:00 dinner, early sleep.

Day 3 · Movement

Vinyasa flow in the morning (60 min). Longer hike up Monte Pizzocolo (1,500 m). Conscious breathing on the climb, Vipassana meditation at the summit. Lunch with a packed picnic. Descent in silence. Evening warm bath or whirlpool, light dinner.

Day 4 · Silence

"Silent day" — if travelling as two: agreed in advance, no talking until sunset. Morning yoga (60 min), breakfast. Two-hour walk alone in the morning. Lunch in silence. Afternoon reading or meditating. Dinner — the first words of the day, what shifted?

Day 5 · Integration

Slow morning, Yin sequence, breakfast. Morning olive-oil tasting at Comincioli (sensory practice, no digital distraction). Lunch at Trattoria Esplanade Salò. Afternoon journalling or a slow walk. Final sunset by the lake. Early travel home in the morning.

Practical notes

Best time for a self-planned retreat: mid-April to mid-June (spring, everything in bloom) or mid-September to late October (autumn, mild light). High summer works too, but only with very early morning practice — too hot midday for intense work. Winter works for "indoor retreats" with whirlpool recovery — see the article on the whirlpool in winter.

Price logic: 5 nights at Sunrise Sky · M2 in low season from €119/night (for 1–2 people). That lands around €600 for the apartment. Compare: a professional group yoga retreat costs €1,500–2,500. You save money and gain control of your time.
