The honest road-cycling season at Lake Garda is February–April and September–November — not the hot July. Mild climate, empty roads, the best light of the year. Five routes from Toscolano-Maderno every road cyclist should ride once — from recovery loop to the Tremalzo queen stage.

Why the west shore is in its own league for road cycling

Three arguments: The Gardesana Occidentale (SP45) is one of the most scenic roads in Europe — 80 km along the west shore, tunnels cut through rock, bays, olive groves, almost no elevation. The mountains behind deliver real climbs: Tremalzo (1,700 m of elevation gain), Monte Baldo (1,500 m), Tignale, Tremosine. And the climate is often 12–18 °C in February — while at home there is still snow.

Pros train here in March and October. Not by accident.

The five routes

Route 1 · Recovery — Maderno → Limone → Maderno

60 km · 400 m climb · 2:30 h · easy

The classic west-shore loop. Out of Maderno, lakeside all the way, through the tunnels of Tignale, over Tremosine to Limone sul Garda. Espresso at the harbour, then back. Perfect for day 1 or as a roll-out after a hard stage.

Route 2 · Classic — Gardesana west-shore loop

110 km · 800 m climb · 4:30 h · medium

Maderno → Salò → Desenzano → Sirmione (southern tip) → back along the west shore. Almost entirely lakeside, a few light hills behind Salò, but a spectacular view of Sirmione. In November often the most beautiful tour of the season.

Route 3 · Mountain stage — Tremosine + Tignale

75 km · 1,400 m climb · 4 h · medium-hard

The two most famous plateaus above the Lago in one day. Maderno → climb to Pieve di Tremosine (the village from the Instagram photos) → across the plateau to Tignale → descend back to Maderno. Steep ramps, rewarding views, the "Strada della Forra" on the way back.

Route 4 · Queen stage — Tremalzo

100 km · 2,200 m climb · 6 h · hard

The hardest thing the west shore offers. Up to 1,700 m, with gravel passages at the top (for road or gravel bike — please clarify in advance what your equipment can handle). Reward: a view over the entire Lago. Tip: only ride this in top form, plenty of water, start early.

Route 5 · Pleasure — Valpolicella wine tour

90 km · 600 m climb · 4 h · medium

Cross to the east side at Salò → Garda → into the hills of Valpolicella → Bardolino → ferry back to Maderno. End the day with a wine tasting at a vineyard. The most beautiful route for couples with different paces.

Logistics in the apartment

What road cyclists need on-site — and what we have:

If you don't bring your own bike: Centro Nautico Maderno rents road bikes from €35/day — book in advance, in season they sell out fast.

The week plan — a real training week

A tested 7-day structure for ambitious hobbyists with around 6,000 annual km:

Week total: ~440 km, ~5,000 m climbing, four real training sessions plus two recovery days.

Best time for a camp

February–April: season build-up. Climate 8–16 °C, low traffic, hotels and restaurants reopen from mid-March. Note: the Tremalzo pass may still be closed until April (snow at the top).

September–November: form-building for late-season highlights. 14–22 °C, clear light, roads emptier than in summer. November particularly beautiful — but Tremalzo often already closed.

High summer (July–August): not recommended. Too hot, too crowded, traffic on the Gardesana sluggish. Better May or early June — local insider tip.

Planning a training camp: 7 nights from €119 at Sunrise Sky · M2 or €159 at Boutique Sky · M1 (for groups up to 5). With the off-season weekly discount, noticeably cheaper than a bike hotel — and you have privacy.
