November at Lake Garda is the most under-the-radar season. Many guidebooks warn of "wet weather", official tourism sites are full of summer pictures, nobody writes honestly what is actually open and what isn't. This list is the answer — from Toscolano-Maderno, personally tested.
The November weather · honestly
What the statistics say: early November still often 16–20 °C during the day, mid-November around 12–16 °C, late November around 8–12 °C. Several rainy days must be planned in — typically three to five wet days per month, often in a row.
What statistics don't say: good days in November are often radiantly clear, with the unusually sharp air the summer never has. Mountains look closer, sunsets are the most beautiful natural phenomenon of the season. Catching a sunny day, you forget all the others.
Recommendation: early November is more reliable than late. Up to All Saints (1.11.) it's usually still late-summer weather, after that it tips.
What is open in November
Fully open — no restrictions
- Trattorias and restaurants in Toscolano-Maderno — most local restaurants are open year-round. Trattoria San Marco, La Veranda, Bar Centrale, Pizzeria Da Mario all from 11:30.
- Bakeries and grocery shops — the bakery in the village centre, the supermarket, the Friday market — all as usual.
- Pharmacy, bank, post office, gas stations — Italy has no "season" for basic services.
- Frantoi (olive mills) — particularly active in November due to harvest (see our article on the olive harvest at the west shore).
- Salò and Brescia as day trips — both cities function year-round, with restaurants, cafés, shops.
Reduced opening
- Hotel beach clubs — outdoor pools mostly closed (October shutdown), loungers stored away.
- Sights and castles — Scaliger castle Sirmione, Vittoriale Gardone — usually still open, but with reduced hours (Wed–Sun, 10–16 typical). Check online before visiting.
- Tourism offices — shorter hours, often closed midday.
- Gardaland and theme parks — seasonal closure from early November to spring.
- Ferry connections (Navigarda) — reduced schedule from November, weekend connections limited. Maderno–Torri route usually continues.
Completely closed
- Beach bars (lidos) — all closed, from October. Beach activities only make sense from May again.
- Boat rentals — Centro Nautico Maderno and similar close end of October.
- Some hotels — smaller family hotels often close November–February. Vacation apartments like ours stay open year-round.
- Ice-cream parlours — most closed, a few in Salò stay open (Italian Italians eat gelato in winter too).
What is actually worth it in November
1. Olive harvest and tastings
The main argument for November. Frantoio Comincioli in Puegnago, Manestrini in Soiano, Bonomelli in Toscolano itself — all in peak season for visitors. Guided tours, tastings, buying straight from the mill. See detail in the olive harvest article.
2. Hiking on the slopes
Hiking routes Tremosine, Tignale, Monte Pizzocolo are in top form in November. Mild climate, clear visibility, no summer tourists. On some routes, check the weather — Tremalzo is often already covered in snow at the top by late November.
3. Photographing sunsets
The clear November sunsets are the best the Lago has to offer. The promenade from Maderno to Toscolano, the harbour of Salò, the viewpoint Madonna del Castelliere — all postcards in the right 15 minutes.
4. Discover Salò
In summer overrun, in November almost empty. Old town, cathedral, the Vittoriale museum 5 minutes away in Gardone Riviera. Spending a day in Salò, you understand why Mussolini founded a Repubblica here — the place has substance.
5. Workcation
For all the self-employed with home-office option: November and February are the secret seasons for workcation. The apartments are cheaper, the internet is fast, the promenade is empty. More in the workcation article on the DE blog.
What doesn't work in November
- Swimming in the lake — 12–14 °C water temperature. Only for trained cold-water swimmers.
- Lying at the beach — pebble loungers gone, wind brisk.
- Late-evening promenade apéro — everything closes by 19:00, many bars by 18:00.
- Water sports — surfing, SUP only at the south shore still feasible, with wetsuit.
Recommendations for trip planning
If you're travelling in November:
- At least 4 nights — with 1–2 rainy days, you need buffer days for the beautiful tours.
- Bring the car — bus connections are thin in winter, a car extends your range.
- Check reservations — even with restaurants open: at weekends, Italian families from Brescia and Verona come to eat, busy in November too.
- Pack warm layers — layered principle. Morning cool, midday warm, evening cool again.
- Use the whirlpool — if you book Resort Sky Spa · M4, the whirlpool is the perfect warm anchor after cool hikes — particularly in November.
Still unsure: write us. We live here, know which routes work in November, which restaurants are open right now, which frantoi are currently pressing.
