Italy is more dog-friendly than Germany or the UK, but not everywhere. Travelling to Lake Garda with a dog, you want clarity: where can the dog go to the beach, which routes work, which vet is nearby in an emergency, which restaurants actually welcome dogs. Here is the list — tested, personal.

Before you go · Travel documents

For entry to Italy with a dog you need:

Bringing more than three dogs requires an additional permit. Listed-breed dogs (XL Bully etc.) need additional approvals depending on region — check with the embassy in advance.

Dog beaches at the west shore

Lake Garda has set up several official dog beaches in recent years. The key ones at the west shore:

Bau Beach Maderno

Directly in Toscolano-Maderno, five minutes on foot from our apartments. Fenced area, dogs can swim off-leash, fresh-water showers for paws. May to September, free entry.

Spiaggia Cane Salò

10 min by car. Larger area, sandier than most west-shore beaches, bar with water bowls right at the beach. Day entry ~€5.

Bau Beach Bardolino (east shore)

20 min by ferry. The largest and most established dog-beach facility at the Lago. Worth the day trip.

Note: at many regular beaches dogs are forbidden in summer (June–September). In off-season, the bans are often relaxed — ask, don't assume.

Hiking routes with a dog

Easy · Valle delle Cartiere

1-hour walk through the old paper-mill gorge behind Toscolano. Shaded, with streams, perfect in summer. Dogs love the water, paths are flat and easy.

Medium · Sentiero dell'Olivo

2–3 hours between Pieve di Tremosine and Tignale through olive groves. No official dog ban, but local farmers have sheep — keep dogs on leash in April/May (lambing season). Water sources limited along the way — bring drinking water.

Demanding · Monte Pizzocolo

4-hour climb to 1,580 m. For trained dogs comfortable with heights (some exposed sections at the top). Best conditions in spring and autumn. Dogs welcome in the summit refuge.

Dog-friendly restaurants

Italy is generally relaxed about dogs in restaurants — provided they behave. These five explicitly welcome dogs:

Note: indoor areas in Italy can be stricter than terraces. Ask first; in the west-shore climate you sit outside most of the time anyway.

Vets and emergencies

Key addresses for emergencies:

Italy has no central emergency number for pet emergencies. In a real emergency, drive directly to the nearest 24-hour vet — Pronto Soccorso Salò.

Apartment setting with a dog

Our apartments are dog-friendly with prior agreement (small to medium-sized dogs, well-socialised, no barking in the hallway).

When booking please specify:

Provided in the apartment on request via Ezio:

Cleaning surcharge: €30 per stay. That covers it — our apartments have marble and travertine floors, no carpet, easy to clean.

Practical · the best time

April to June and September to October are the ideal months. Mild climate, lush vegetation, beaches not yet crowded, restaurants relaxed. High summer (July–August) is hard for heat-intolerant dogs — the asphalt burns at 14:00, many dog beaches are then packed. Winter works for brave dog owners (west-shore hike in January at 8 °C) as well.
